God’s Hands in Nature
We live in a fallen world, no doubt about it. Often we are so steeped in the brokenness of the world that we forget the power that light has over darkness. As Christians, we live in a state of “in-between.” In between our flesh and spirit, and between Jesus’ kingdom on earth and the kingdom to come. Hebrews 13:14 says, “For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come” (NLT). So it is Christians often find themselves in a state of grief, minding the gap between the real and ideal.
For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
Hebrews 13:14
And yet, God’s mercies are new every morning. While it is not in our power to fix all the world’s problems in one snap of the fingers, we find clues of God’s goodness all around us. Nature has God’s fingerprints all over it. From the cellular level to the uncharted corners of the universe, the intricacy and beauty of nature speaks to a Creator. It is not just beauty we observe, but extravagance – in the curl of flower petals, the splash of galaxies against the dark night, and in the joy of birds singing also in the morning. And there is humor to be found in nature. Creation speaks to a God with personality and purpose. And, though we wrestle with trouble in the world, we read that we are God’s creation, made in His image.
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
Nature has God’s fingerprints
all over it.
Take time to appreciate God's handiwork in nature.
The God who made the stars and sky above holds us in His hands! In good times and bad, we remember that we worship a God whose ways are higher than our own. This is not to discount our very real struggles. Simply, the goodness of God exists at a depth that matches and then surpasses our own troubles. Taking time to appreciate God's handiwork in nature and in our own good experiences (however few they may be) reminds us of the good that is to come.
